Product Description

Ceramic plungers are precision industrial components made from high-performance ceramic materials such as alumina and zirconia. Manufactured through high-temperature sintering and precision machining, they can replace traditional metal plungers. Their core features include ultra-high hardness, wear resistance, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. 

They are widely used in high-pressure pumps, metering pumps, and spray pumps in the pharmaceutical, chemical, petroleum, and metallurgical industries, replacing traditional metal plungers to address wear, corrosion, and contamination issues.

Performance Advantages and Application

1. Alumina is the earliest and most technologically mature industrial ceramic, offering excellent cost-effectiveness.
  • The core advantages of alumina ceramic plungers lie in their ultra-high hardness, excellent high-temperature resistance, and lower cost.
  • The higher surface hardness provides exceptional resistance to abrasive wear. Furthermore, it maintains stable performance even in high-temperature environments.

Typical Applications of Alumina Ceramic Plunger:
  • Medium- and high-pressure wear-resistant pumps: Such as chemical process pumps, mortar pumps, and slurry pumps, where the media is highly abrasive but the pressures are relatively moderate.
  • High-temperature Applications: Applications requiring the pumping of high-temperature media or high ambient temperatures.
  • Cost-Sensitive Applications: In relatively mild operating conditions with low impact loads, alumina plungers are the preferred choice due to their excellent cost-effectiveness.


2. Zirconia achieves unparalleled toughness through a "phase transformation toughening" mechanism, which is its greatest advantage.

  • The core advantages of zirconia ceramic plungers lie in their high toughness, high strength, and excellent comprehensive wear resistance.
  • They are more resistant to impact and fracture, can withstand greater eccentric loads and unexpected mechanical shock, and generally have a longer service life. In high-pressure operating conditions with frequent starts and stops, or vibration, their reliability is far superior to that of alumina.

Typical applications for zirconia ceramic plungers:
  • Ultra-high-pressure pumps: For example, plungers in water jet (high-pressure water jet cutting) pumps, operating pressures often reach 300-400 MPa or even higher, making zirconia the absolute first choice.
  • High-speed reciprocating pumps: For applications requiring extremely high fatigue strength and reliability.
  • Conditions prone to eccentric wear or impact: Due to its excellent toughness, it can better adapt to less-than-ideal installation environments.
