Product Description

The fiber ferrule is the core component of fiber optic connectors (such as FC, SC, and LC connectors). It is a microscopic sleeve. Zirconia ceramic ferrules are made of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) material.

The zirconia ceramic fiber ferrule is a seemingly tiny, yet technologically advanced, foundational component. It perfectly demonstrates how advanced ceramic materials can solve critical challenges in precision engineering:
  • What it is: The core precision sleeve that secures and aligns optical fibers in fiber optic connectors.
  • Core Material: Yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), known for its unparalleled strength, toughness, thermal stability, wear resistance, and machinability.
  • Core Technology: Micron-level dimensional control and nanometer-level end-face polishing technology, particularly the APC bevel process.
  • Core Value: Achieving low-loss, low-echo, and high-reliability transmission of optical signals is the cornerstone of building the entire modern optical communication network.

Common Size Specifications:

Single-core ceramic ferrules are the most common and widely used type, used in common connectors such as FC, SC, LC, and ST.

Parameters Standard Specifications Tolerances Remarks
Outer Diameter 2.499 mm ±0.0005 mm This is the most common specification, used for FC and SC connectors.
1.249 mm ±0.0003 mm Used for the smaller LC connector.
Hole Diameter 126 μm +1.0 / -0 μm Designed to accommodate optical fibers with a cladding diameter of 125 μm and provide a sufficient margin for adhesive injection and bonding.
Concentricity ≤ 1.0 μm - High-end products require a minimum of 0.5 μm. This refers to the offset between the center of the inner hole and the center of the outer diameter, a key indicator affecting connection loss.
Roundness ≤ 1.0 μm - This refers to the deviation in the outer diameter shape, which affects the stability of the connection with the adapter.
Length ~5.0 mm 至 ~15.0 mm ±0.1 mm The specific length varies depending on the design of the connector.

Main Application Areas

Zirconia ceramic ferrules are the core of nearly all types of fiber optic connectors and are widely used in:
  • Fiber optic communication networks: from long-haul trunk networks to fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access networks.
  • Data centers: High-speed optical interconnects between servers and switches create a huge demand for ferrules.
  • 5G network construction: Fiber optic connections between base stations and fronthaul and midhaul networks.
  • Cable television (CATV) networks: High return loss requirements necessitate the widespread use of APC connectors.
  • Test instruments: Interfaces for devices such as optical power meters and OTDRs.
  • Medical and military equipment: Endoscopes, laser medical equipment, and military optical transceivers.
