Product Description

Alumina ceramic discs are disc- or plate-shaped components made from high-purity alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramic material. They are produced by dry-pressing, isostatically pressing, or slip-casting fine alumina powder, followed by sintering at temperatures exceeding 1600°C.

The performance of alumina discs increases depending on the alumina content (e.g., 95% or 99%). They can be simple gaskets, high-precision grinding platforms, or insulating substrates.

Performance Characteristics & Advantages

Alumina ceramic discs' properties are the foundation of their widespread use:
  • High hardness and wear resistance: Vickers hardness can reach 1500-1650 HV, second only to silicon carbide and boron carbide. This makes them extremely wear-resistant and long-lasting.
  • Excellent high-temperature resistance: They can withstand long-term use at temperatures up to 1600°C, with a melting point exceeding 2000°C. They do not oxidize or melt at high temperatures, maintaining their shape and strength.
  • Excellent electrical insulation: They have high resistivity at room temperature, making them an excellent insulator and maintain good insulation properties even at high temperatures.
  • Excellent chemical stability: They are resistant to corrosion by strong acids, strong alkalis, and many molten metals, are insoluble in water, and never rust.
  • High mechanical strength: They have very high compressive strength, but average flexural strength and are brittle, requiring protection from impact and stress concentration.
  • Low friction coefficient & smooth surface: They can be polished to a very smooth surface with a low coefficient of friction.

Core Advantages

  • Durability: Extreme hardness and wear resistance ensure an extremely long service life under harsh operating conditions.
  • High-temperature resistance: Operates stably in high-temperature environments unbearable by ordinary metals and plastics.
  • Reliable insulation: Provides stable and safe electrical insulation.
  • Corrosion resistance: Suitable for chemical environments with low maintenance costs.
  • Versatile: By varying the formulation, shape, and processing precision, it can meet a wide range of needs, from simple to demanding.

Main Application Areas

Alumina ceramic discs have a wide range of applications and are categorized below based on their functions:
1. As pressure-bearing, wear-resistant components
  • Pump and valve seal rings and bushings: Leveraging their wear and corrosion resistance, they are used in chemical pumps and mechanical seals.
  • Wear-resistant liners and chute linings: Used in mines, power plants, and steel mills to protect equipment from material erosion.
  • Nozzles: Used as sandblasting or spray nozzles, they are more wear-resistant than metal nozzles.
  • Textile ceramic components: Such as yarn guides, they are smooth and wear-resistant, without damaging fibers.

2. As high-temperature components
  • Kiln linings, setters, and pusher plates: Used in electronic ceramic sintering, lithium battery material sintering, and powder metallurgy, they support products and withstand high temperatures.
  • Thermocouple protection sleeves: Protect thermocouples from high-temperature molten metal or corrosive atmospheres.
  • High-temperature observation windows: Used as high-temperature-resistant transparent or translucent observation windows in certain specialty furnaces.

3. As Electrical Insulation Components
  • Circuit Substrates (Electronic Ceramics): Used as insulating and heat-dissipating substrates for thick-film and thin-film circuits, as well as power electronic modules (such as IGBTs). They require extremely high surface flatness and purity.
  • Insulating Spacers and Insulating Pillars: Provide support and insulation in high-voltage switches, vacuum circuit breakers, and power equipment.
  • Semiconductor Equipment Components: Used as insulating fixtures in wafer manufacturing equipment.

4. As High-Precision Functional Components
  • Grinding Discs and Polishing Platforms: Leveraging their high hardness, flatness, and wear resistance, they are used for precision grinding and polishing of materials such as semiconductors, optical glass, and sapphire.
  • Laser Accessories: Used as discharge tubes and reflector bases for CO₂ laser tubes, due to their excellent insulation and thermal stability.
  • Vacuum Chucks: Used in semiconductor and electronic assembly to secure wafers or components through vacuum suction, ensuring smooth and damage-free workpiece assembly.

5. General and Special Uses
  • Bulletproof Armor: Composited with other materials for lightweight ballistic protection of the human body and vehicles.
  • Artificial joints (such as hip joints): Utilize their high hardness, wear resistance, and biocompatibility.
  • Knives: Ceramic fruit knives and scissors are sharp and rust-resistant, but they are also brittle.
